Make Way for the Chevrolet Malibu

In 2017 the Chevrolet Malibu was named best mid-size car for families by US News & World report. The 2018 model builds on that success to make the best in class even more appealing. Great looks, plenty of equipment and ever-increasing levels of tech, combined with a roomy cabin and clever use of space make the Malibu a standout choice in the midsize sedan segment.

Design of the Chevrolet Malibu

Chevrolet seems to be borrowing its design ideas throughout the range and this means that the Malibu benefited from some sportier models. Absolutely every part of this car is harmonious and stylish. The front hosts beautiful headlights, a thin upper and a wider lower grille separated by a strip holds the brands badge. The lower front spoiler adds a lot to the sporty look as does the wonderfully sculpted hood.

The side and rear also have stylish shapes and details. The side has slightly curved sheet metal that plays with light and reflections creating elegant lines from any angle. The rear has large taillights, but also an elevated trunk lid that somewhat doubles as a subtle spoiler and a big bumper underpinned by a faux diffuser with large dual exhausts.

The latest Malibu is a stylish car from every angle and a big step up from the previous version.

Interior of the Chevrolet Malibu

Interior design is also very upmarket in the Chevrolet Malibu with good materials and unusual shapes. Upright central air vents are reminiscent of some other Chevrolet vehicles and the high infotainment screen is easy to read and use. Climate controls are located under it and localized in a small space.

The central console is practical and has a storage tray, gear lever, cupholders and an armrest with a storage bin. Door pockets hold bottles and even larger items and the rear has cup holders in the armrest. The layout is functional and uncluttered and there is plenty of space.

Passengers in the rear have enough space even if they are taller adults. The stylish roofline slopes near the rear, but headroom is sufficient despite this.

USB outlets are found in the front and back. MyLink comes in most trims, but not in all. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are also included from the LS up, as is Wi-Fi and OnStar services. Depending on the trim level, the touchscreen is 7 or 8 inches.

Engines and Drive of the Chevrolet Malibu

The entry level powering option is a 1.5 l turbo with VVT, direct injection and start-stop system. It produces 163 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque from 2500 RPM.

The most powerful version is a 2.0 turbo with 250 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque.

The Hybrid version is powered by a 1.8 l engine with two more electric motors that provides the combined power output of 182 hp and 278 lb-ft of torque. It is rated at 5.5l on the highway and 4.8 in the city. It can also work on electric power alone.

The hybrid powertrain and the turbo ones do their jobs really well. The Malibu is at a very high level in terms of performance, handling and comfort, which makes it a great all-round option.

The entry-level 1.5 never feels overwhelming. The turbo kicks in pretty low for added boost for acceleration and the car always feel competent.

However, if you are up for some driving fun, you’ll do a lot better with the 2.0 turbo which boasts 250 hp – more than enough for a car of this size. It pulls with confidence from almost any RPM and provides hard acceleration and loads of entertainment. Ease back on the throttle and it becomes a civilized vehicle with a quiet and smooth ride. Add to this the fact that the 2.0 comes only in the Premier trim level which is packed with comfort, tech and safety features, and the Malibu becomes an exceptionally good car even when observed from the position of higher class vehicles.

The Hybrid gives a lot of power to the electric motors which can propel the car to over 80 km/h on electric power alone. As conditions become more difficult, the engine intervenes more prominently, so you will mostly notice it while overtaking or going up some steep hills. Electric motors have instantly available torque at any RPM, so acceleration is so smooth that it is reminiscent of some electric only vehicles. The Hybrid really gives the best of both worlds.

Suspension is tuned for a great mix of composure and comfort. It provides enough precision during heavier turns, but also finds a way to soak up road imperfections. Combine this with a well-insulated cabin and the Malibu becomes an excellent motorway cruiser.
